November 03, 2006
The WirelessHD Consortium, consisting of the world's major electronics makers, is developing a wireless technology to deliver uncompressed high-definition multimedia data using an unlicensed 60GHz radio frequency band. This technology is envisaged to transmit high-definition audiovisual content to HDTV receivers and other fixed or portable devices over a distance of ten meters in a single room; the transmission rate is projected to reach 5Gbps at the fastest. Specifications for this technology are scheduled to be finalized in the first quarter of 2007. Members of the consortium include LG, Matsushita, NEC, Samsung, SiBeam, Sony, and Toshiba.
